In this collection of writings and essays, Protopresbyter Valery Lukianov shares insights and lessons gleaned from fifty years of dedicated pastoral service. Although addressed particularly to clergy and those contemplating the priestly vocation, this book will also be of interest to all believers. In discussing the role of the priest as a spiritual guide in the parish, the author helps the faithful to gain a better understanding of the life and Sacraments of the Church.
Fr Valery is among the most widely respected pastors in the Russian Church Abroad. He received his theological training at Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville, NY, and was ordained to the diaconate by the Holy Hierarch John of Shanghai and San Francisco in 1963. Four years later, Metropolitan Philaret (Voznesensky) ordained him to the priesthood and assigned him to St Alexander Nevsky Church, where he remains today as pastor emeritus. Drawing on his secular education as an architect, Fr Valery designed and erected a beautiful cathedral, which is now the see of the Eastern American Diocese. Throughout his fifty years of ministering to the spiritual needs of the faithful, Fr Valery directed the schooling of children and lectured extensively at church assemblies and celebrations, as well as at pastoral and youth conferences.
