DAILY READINGS SERIES
The way of life of the fourth-century Desert Fathers, with its emphasis on solitude, silence and unceasing prayer, has inspired many modern spiritual writers, including Henri J. M. Nouwen, Charles de Foucauld and Carlo Carretto. What is its fascination? Why have these Fathers, whose lifestyle is so very different from ours, had so much to say, not only to monks and nuns but also to lay people?
Sister Benedicta Ward answers these questions by presenting some of the best and most illuminating stories and saying from the desert. Readers will find much spiritual wisdom along with some sharp humour and a startling insight into human nature. This is a memorable addition to the bestselling Daily Readings Series.
Sister Benedicta Ward is a member of the Community of the Sisters of the Love of God, based at Fairacres in Oxford, and lectures in Christian spirituality at Oxford University. She is the translator of The Sayings of the Desert Fathers (Mowbray/Cistercian Studies 1981).
This book is part of the Daily Readings Series edited by Robert Llewelyn, which presents selections from the spiritual classics in a form suitable for daily reading and meditation.

A great collection; impactful and portable
This is my first collection of wisdom from the Desert Fathers and Mothers and I'm loving it so much. These brief, impactful selections are a great companion for a morning cup of coffee or an afternoon walk around the neighborhood (perfectly sized to slide right into your back pocket or the inside pocket of a denim jacket!). Thanks SVP!
