This series of books on Jesus is not so much for those Christians who are rooted in holy tradition as it is for non-believers, those who doubt and who are hesitant. In the first instance, it may give some answers to those who believe that Jesus never even existed. Secondly, it is for those who believe that Jesus existed but do not believe that he is God. Thirdly, it is for those who perhaps consider themselves Christians but relate to the Gospel narratives skeptically or view the Gospels through the prism of the criticism through which it was subjected in the works of Western specialists in the New Testament in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Ultimately, we would like to answer the main question of what Jesus has brought to people and why he is necessary for people today. – from the Foreword.

The set include volumes 1-5 of the Jesus Christ: His Life & Teaching series.

Review of Jesus Christ: His Life and Teaching by Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev

Posted by Joseph Simon on 1st Oct 2025

In the field of historical studies about Jesus, most of the pioneering work has been carried out by Catholic and Protestant scholars. What makes this series truly distinctive is that Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev, one of the most distinguished Orthodox theologians of our time, brings the Orthodox perspective into the conversation. His contribution enriches the field by reminding us that Jesus cannot be reduced to history alone.

Jesus Christ is above history: He is the head of the Church in heaven and on earth, and the Church is His body. Therefore, the true assessment of the “historical Jesus” cannot be separated from the “Christ of faith.” Without this foundation, any information about Him will always lack its essential core. This is the approach taken by the apostles and by St. Paul when they wrote the New Testament—rooting their testimony in faith and revelation, not in detached historical speculation.

Thus, this work by Metropolitan Hilarion is not just a scholarly study but a profound theological witness, presenting the only right way to approach Jesus: through the living faith of the Church. Anything less risks producing false conclusions.
