Anyone attempting to engage in Christian education at any level of parish life should do so with the benefit of relatively new knowledge from developmental psychology and educational psychology, and should also have a broad understanding, rooted in Christian tradition, of the nature of the Christian life.

Dr. Boojamra provides an analysis of current Christian education practices and identifies the foundations of Orthodox Christian education as “community,” “family,” and “personhood.” While other foundations could be identified, these provide a convenient point of departure both for further discussion and for effective action in the parish and home.

Conversant with a wide range of Christian educational viewpoints, Dr. Boojamra is able to forge a distinctively Orthodox approach that makes the most of historical strengths and brings a perception of psychological and sociological insights to enrich education. ... He enlightens us as to the distinctively Orthodox elements and helps us to see our own distinctiveness as well as areas in which we can learn from the Orthodox approach. I was impressed with the book as one that we in the non-Orthodox Christian tradition have long needed and will welcome.

—Dr. Iris Cully,
Professor Emeritus of Religious Education,
Lexington Theological Seminary

Dr. John Boojamra (1938–1999) taught at St. Vladimir’s Seminary from 1977 until his death in 1999, including as a lecturer in Religious Education, and served as Director of the Orthodox Christian Education Commission.
